About Project Literade
Project Literade, founded by Dr. Cantrell Johnson, is a nationwide 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization centered on book ownership as a foundation for reading from birth through age 18. The organization places brand-new books into readers’ hands through direct-to-home book mail and occasional pop-up distributions.

Project Literade affirms a simple principle: owning books plays an important role in how readers develop a relationship with reading. With this foundation, reading unfolds on the reader’s own terms—for example, in a blanket fort, stretched out on the couch, sharing a story with someone close, or lingering over pages with a favorite snack.
With books that belong to readers, literacy develops in visible, joyful ways. Babies chew, bang, and explore books as objects to touch and examine; toddlers delight in the repetition of familiar words and pictures; and older readers move among stories guided by curiosity, confidence, and a growing sense of who they are as readers.
